Trip Information

SECOND DAY HIKE - JULY 10, 2010 - POINT REYES YOUTH HOSTEL TO COAST CAMP, SKY CAMP AND BEAR VALLEY

This hike will be about 9 miles, in the Point Reyes National Seashore, with an elevation gain/loss of about 1530 feet.  We will begin our hike at the Point Reyes Youth Hostel and go South, on the Laguna Trail, to Coast Camp.  From there we head southeast, along the Coast Trail, to the Woodward Valley Trail.  We will then ascend the WVT to the Sky Trail, stopping at Sky Camp for lunch.  (And maybe some compass sighting practice.)  After lunch we will back track to the Mount Wittenberg Trail and descend to the Bear Valley Visitor Center.  We will then car shuttle back to the YH, before heading to Point Reyes Station for dinner.  Perhaps at the Station House Cafe.

For this hike we will rendezvous at the Whale of a Deli, at the South end of "Main Street" (Highway 1) in Point Reyes Station.  From the East Bay, by way of Highway 37:  Take Highway 101 South to Lucas Valley Road.  Follow LVR to Nicasio Valley Road.  Turn North, through Nicasio, to the Point Reyes Petaluma Road.  Turn West, past Nicasio Reservoir, to the stop sign, turning right across the "Purple Bridge".  Continue on to Highway 1, turning left to Point Reyes Station.  The Whale of a Deli is at the South end of town, where Hwy 1 makes a hard right turn.  The Deli will be right in front of you before the highway turns right.  Be there and ready to leave by 6:30 am.

FOR THIS HIKE YOU WILL NEED:

1.  Your Point Reyes Map.

2.  Your Compass (Set the declination to 14° 20' East).

3.  A sharp pencil and your 12" folding ruler.

4.  Your lunch.

5.  Water.

6.  Clothing suitable for hiking on the coast.  Think Layers.  The weather along the north coast is variable, so be ready for fog and a chilly wind, as well as  warm sun and no wind.

7.  A pack suitable to carry your gear.
