Linda's Wonderful Wildflower Hike

Trip Information

SATURDAY, JULY 17, 2010

For many years now Linda Farmer has been leading a wildflower day hike to Lake Winnemucca, in the Mokelumne Wilderness.  The trailhead is South of Highway 88, at Carson Pass.  The hike is a very easy 5 mile round trip, with an altitude gain of about 550 feet.  Lake Winnemucca is at an elevation of 8980 and lies at the foot of the North face of 10,300 foot high, Round Top Peak.  This area is renowned for lush springtime wildflowers.  We amble along taking many photos and stop for a leisurely lunch, along the lake's southern shore. There is usually a snow bank, just West of the lake outlet, and we may be able to test the slope by butt sliding.   This has been a great snow year and I imagine there will be some wet butts.

This hike may be done as a simple day hike or you may consider staying over night and driving home on Sunday, after breakfast.  I have inserted Linda's email text to describe her "stay-over" option:

"you might be more interested in knowing that the annual wildflower hike is July 17. This year, I've reserved 2 rooms (1 king bed in each room) at the Creekside Lodge in Markleeville for $108 per room. Won't it be nice to drive down the mountain, have some dinner in Markleeville and then soak in the hot springs? Please let me know if there is any interest in staying over. I can cancel three days before the 17th without a penalty and there is availability for more rooms if we need it. My guess is that we'd need to call soon to book it."

Typically we leave from Benicia at about 6:00 am and caravan to Rancho Cordova and Pollock Pines, to meet up with our "eastern California" members.  From there we drive east, on Mormon Emigrant Trail, to Highway 88.  From there we proceed East to Carson Pass.  If we're only doing a day trip we're usually home by mid evening.

This trip is a ways off yet but you should put it on your calendar.  I will be putting notices of this hike in future newsletters.
