Greetings from the Red Leader,
We're off to a great start with the 2010 Backpacking Workshop. Our new members are Cristina Lauck, Mark Johnson, Laura McKeegan and Rod Williams. Of our new members, the two women in the group are very motivated; Laura and Cristina are very much "with" the light weight backpacking trend.
Laura has been researching light weight backpacking options and has made some of her own ultra-light equipment. She has built a soda can alcohol stove, and beer can pot, and has also made her own ultra-light hammock and underquilt. Laura is currently contemplating buying a LuxuryLight pack frame and sewing her own pack bag, in lieu of the standard cylinders.
On Saturday, June 12, during our outfitters tour, Cristina eagerly examined tents, sleeping bags, boots and backpacks. I believe Cristina has decided on a LuxuryLight backpack and a Tarptent Scarp 1. I spoke with her the other evening and she's already purchased a new, light weight, sleeping bag. If I expect to keep my pack base weight lower than Laura's and Cristina's, I'm going to have to start drilling holes in the holes I already drilled in my toothbrush. Note to self: Do not drill holes in cook pots, fuel bottles or canteens. No holes in sleeping bags either.
